Psychedelic News & Science Round-UpNew York State Legalises Cannabis and Expunges Cannabis-related Convictions At the end of March, a deal was finalised by New York State lawmakers to legalise cannabis, making it the 15th US state legally allowing the recreational use of cannabis in adults. The law will allow New Yorkers to possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and grow up to 6 cannabis plants per household. Furthermore, anybody who has been criminalised for possession of cannabis will have their sentence removed. By legalising the sale of cannabis, it’s estimated that opening up the market could create up to 60,000 jobs and generate $350 million in annual tax. The deal will include “equity programmes” where loads and grants are provided for small farmers and people from communities disproportionately affected by prohibition that wish to enter the industry.

Looking to mescaline as a board-spectrum therapeutic Of the classical psychedelics, LSD and psilocybin have hit the headlines several times in their capacity to produce profound, healing effects. But what about mescaline - a historically used psychedelic derived from various cacti found in the Americas? Scientific research published at the end of March suggests that mescaline could help improve PTSD, anxiety, depression and substance use disorders. Of the patients who had reported histories of these clinical conditions, around 75% reported subjective improvement following their most memorable mescaline experience.

Could certain traits identify whether people will benefit from psychedelic therapy? Research published this month investigated 14 different clinical trials using psychedelics to determine whether there were particular personality traits associated with positive or negative outcomes in response to psychedelic therapy. The researchers showed patients high in personality traits of absorption, openness, acceptance and state of surrender were more likely to have positive experiences. Whereas, patients low in personality traits of openness and surrender, or feeling preoccupied, apprehensive, or confused, were more likely to have negative experiences.

Researchers in Australia to explore treating meth addiction with psilocybin Scientists from St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia, have announced they are planning a clinical trial to investigate whether psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, could help manage people’s addiction to methamphetamines (“meth”). Participants of the study will have at least three counselling sessions with specialised therapists before having psilocybin and at least one additional therapy follow-up session. Our Contributors and Partners: FireJuiceWe filmed a large portion of our documentary at The FireJuice, a psychedelic, queer-friendly B&B nestled in a green neighborhood of Amsterdam. With their sun-bathed garden, yummy vegan breakfasts, and mind-blowing art on the wall, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay and bring film contributors. About the owners, Sonia and Ben: Sonia is French, fond of Couchsurfing adventures, impromptu dances, festivals, and Burning Man events… but above all of food: foraging, gardening, sharing meals, and pleasing her friends and guests’ (high) taste buds. If she had a magic wand, she would dismantle patriarchy and industrial agriculture in one swoosh, then rub her hands in utter delight. Ben, a queer bi-/pansexual man, is an integral psychotherapist in training, who enjoys concepts of great imagination (fantasy, sci-fi and beyond) and having good talks about music, grounded spirituality, embodiment, sexuality, consent, polyamory, and psychedelics, all with a good dose of sharp humor.

Some upcoming events on behalf of our partners, the Psychedelic Society, featuring our proud contributors, and run by some of our project core team members: Good Cop Bad War: Interview With Ex-undercover Operative Neil Woods - 19th April After spending almost 20 years befriending those most victimised by the illicit drug trade, infiltrating clandestine operations and busting vicious criminals, Neil Woods realised the fight against drugs was driving, instead of solving crime. This April Neil will be joined in conversation as we hear his first-hand experience of fighting in the front lines of the drugs war, and the devastating suffering he observed resulting from prohibition.
